Abstract

Introduction: simulation appears to be an appropriate educational strategy, required for nursing graduates training. Existing evidence suggest simulation has multiple benefits, and its use is increasingly common in many places around the world. However, such benefits depend on the way simulation is implemented.
Purpose: to explore appropriateness of simulation use in two nursing degrees in Argentina, based on the simulation model by the National League for Nursing (NLN).
Methods: a qualitative, descriptive-interpreting case study was carried out. Implementation of such an educational strategy was explored; how and how much are the aspects suggested by the NLN model used was analyzed. Data collection was based on semi-structured interviews, direct observation with no intervention, and document review. Data analysis was based on keyword search. Additionally, a signature was designed and used, and was reviewed by experts in the field. NLN-suggested aspects for simulation design were included.
Results: both degrees showed a "low" appropriateness level to NLN framework.
Discussion: results are consistent with the risk reported in literature when using simulation as a technique rather than as an educational strategy.
Conclusions: despite having reached some degree of appropriateness to NLN model, both degrees seem to be far from implementing simulation as an educational strategy, due to the lack of an ordinary use in all their components.
