Abstract

Introduction: although nursing staff is one of the most numerous among health specialties, there is currently a crisis in this workforce in part of Europe, with high rates of unemployment and job insecurity in other areas, which results in migratory flows of specialized health personnel without any control.
Purpose: to establish the effects of the migration of qualified healthcare staff, particularly nurses and specifically midwives, on the healthcare system. As a secondary aim, the effect of this migration both in countries of origin and in countries of destination is analyzed and solutions are proposed.
Methods: a narrative review of the articles published from January 2010 to January 2018 in English and Spanish was carried out in the secondary databases PubMed, Cochrane, and MEDES.
Results: 19 references were considered of interest.
Conclusions: the concern about the magnitude of the migration of nurses and midwives and its possible impact on the healthcare system, both for countries of origin and for countries of destination, is increasing throughout Europe. In this study, two kinds of factors associated with this migration have been found: effects caused by the migration of health professionals on healthcare systems and potential solutions to such phenomena.
