Abstract

Objective: to understand the level of emotional intelligence (EI) among the Nursing staff (nurses and assistants) and technical staff employed by the Nursing Unit of the Fundación Hospital de Jove, and their relationship with socio-occupational factors.
Method: a transversal descriptive study. The TMMS-24 scale was used to quantify the three EI dimensions: emotional attention (EA), clarity of feelings (CF), and emotional repair (ER). The study variables were: gender, age, professional category, years in practice, occupational unit, and previous knowledge of EI. Chi-square, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for bivariate analysis.
Results: in total, 112 (65.8%) questionnaires were received, with a high level of previous knowledge of the EI concept (90.2% among women and 82.6% in men). Regarding the EA dimension, women showed a low level of attention (57.2% paid little attention) vs. men (39.1% paid little attention). No statistically significant differences were found between EI dimensions and gender, professional category, and years in practice.
Conclusions: EI was not associated with the socio-occupational factors studied (gender, professional category and years in practice); however, higher rates of low emotional attention were observed in women. The fact that 90.2% of women and 82.6% of men are aware of EI shows that this is a matter of interest for Nursing professionals.
