Title:

Analysis of the emergency health interventions by a medical helicopter

Abstract:

Objective: to describe the prevalence and characteristics of health conditions managed by the medical helicopter in Teruel for emergency health care.
Method: a descriptive transversal study about the patient care activity of the healthcare helicopter from the 112 Aragón at the Teruel headquarters during 2015. Studied variables: age and gender of the patients managed; activity of the helicopter by months; time to response; places where patient care was conducted; destination of the patients transferred; type of transfer, and condition or reason for the intervention. Descriptive and inference statistical analysis was conducted through Square Chi / Fisher’s Exact Test.
Results: During 2015, there were 92 patients managed by the medical helicopter from the 112 Teruel Headquarters: 75% were male and 25% were female. The months with the highest number of emergency calls were July (n= 11), August (n= 19) and September (n= 11). Cardiovascular conditions were the most frequently seen, with 40.2% of cases, and 57% of these were Infarction Code; these were followed by orthopaedic conditions with 26.1%. The time to response was <30 minutes in 60.9% of the emergency interventions.
Conclusions: the use of the medical helicopter allows to offer fast patient care, mostly in less than half an hour, to Aragón inhabitants, and makes it feasible to apply time-dependent treatments, such as those for the Stroke and Cardiac Codes.
