Abstract

Introduction: Subjective symptoms, such as headache after a lumbar puncture, are related to stimulated neural components.
Purpose: To describe the course of headache after dural puncture in patients receiving spinal block in hospitals Lucía Íñiguez and Vladimir I Lenin.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study in 80 patients aged 16 to 60 years undergoing surgery under spinal anesthesia at the anesthesiology service in hospitals Lucía Iñiguez and Vladimir I Lenin between November 2012 and April 2013, based on their physical condition: healthy patients and patients with compensated systemic diseases. A chi-squared test was used.
Results: In the 16-30-years-old patients a predominance of ASA I group was observed in post-dural puncture headache occurrence (15%); post-puncture headache occurred in 10.0% of patients when using a 22G needle; headache when getting out of bed was observed in 16.3%; and within 24 hours in 8.8%; 7.5% of patients had headache after the first 24 h.
Conclusions: A predominance of the 16-30 age group and female patients was observed. Regarding physical condition, headache was more common in healthy patients. Early ambulation leads to a lower headache incidence.
