Abstract

The purpose of the study is to analyse factors that impinge on nosocomial infections, with special emphasis on extrinsic factors, and to comply the learning objectives proposed in the course.  Thirteen patients admitted to the Reanimation Unit of the Hospital General Universitario La Fe were assessed to conduct the study. Thirteen questionnaires based on the Epine/Epincat 2003 model were filled out, observing a high incidence of respiratory infection. The intrinsic factors showing the highest incidence were a state of coma and chronic pulmonary disease, with mechanical ventilation showing as the highest extrinsic factor. As regards risk invasive techniques, endotracheal aspiration is closely related to respiratory infections. After analysing the results yielded by the study, a protocol proposal for “aspiration via tracheostomy” is included.
