Abstract

As a member of the Mental Healthcare Unit team (MHU), the Mental Health specialist nurse must participate in the multidisciplinary approach that ADD requires due to its great complexity. Her participation is based on the following functions: application of psychotherapeutic techniques to a group, management of conduct characterised by lack of attention and hyperactivity, impulse control training, paternal education on how to raise children, family integrity stimulation, facilitation of expression of guilt and emotions (parents), fomentation of the child’s development, environmental management through child-proved home, etc. The nurse will exercise education, support and counselling for parents of hyperactive children or children suffering from similar symptoms.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to assess how the psychoeducational nursing intervention with hyperactive children’s parents contributes to the improvement of parent-child relationships that had been previously altered, for many studies have proven that ADD always affects communication and dialogue between the child and his/her family, making family life difficult.
The study will take place throughout the six sessions that comprise the psychoeducational program. The first pre-study session will consist of an individual interview with each pair of parents to assess the altered family environment. The next five sessions, which will take place with the entire group of parents, will tackle the following matters: the concept of hyperactivity, parent-child interactions, increase of the parents’ attention regarding their child’s behaviour, performance strategies and program efficacy assessment. Throughout these sessions data will be collected to perform a comparative analysis between the initial altered family relationships and the improvement of this family environment thanks to the psychoeducational nursing intervention program. The area of study will be the Mental Healthcare Unit of Villajoyosa (Area 15 of the Valencian Health Service).
