Abstract

This article responds to a reflexive moment delimited by great expectations to improve our healthcare management and the training and education of professionals. The research initiated in 2003 focuses on the possibilities to humanise organisations. To this end, we have started with the rigor and caution characterised by discipline: see what other business sectors experience in that sense and study the possibilities to adapt such discipline to our setting. In the first place, by language; our concepts on humanisation until now focused on the care of the user or patient and not on the “care” of the professionals; and in the second place, bout our managers as well as the nursing operative, are used to measure results on the direct care provided and the personnel policy focused on hiring, substitutions due to vocational periods and sick leave, while in the most advanced institutions, training was also part of their work. We are used to observe the result of our actions in a more or less short period of time and in a rather tangible manner, thus, to speak about humanising our place of work and to apply the tools that may lead towards an improvement in the management is, at worst, philosophical and, at best, “inoperative”. However, we have found a concept that the business world has turned into one of the most relevant points of their management strategy: the values. These values have represented a vital sing for the nursing profession throughout its entire trajectory and have been present both in the theoretical framework as well as in the practical framework. At present, it is beginning to be included in strategic plannigs as well as in quality excellence models. However, we must insist, our reflection must be absolutely critical and it must invite the readers of this article to examine such values as action tools and not just as a simple marketing image.
