Abstract

The aim of the study is to ascertain the influence of the Homeopathic Hospital and the San Jose Hospital on Spanish nursing.
We searched primary and secondary documentary resources. First, we approached the laws or principles that serve as the basis for homeopathy and the answer given to the new science by the different social groups.
The description of the construction project is analysed using the pursued ideal standards of care and healthcare as reference.
The contribution made by the “Siervas de María”, a religious group founded Santa Soledad Torres Acosta in Madrid in 1851, who were nurses at the Hospital de San José since it was founded in 1878 until 12th March 1888, is also taken into account.
We make special mention of the incorporation to the hospital of the Hijas de la Caridad (an order of sisters) on the 13th of March 1988, who carried out an outstanding nursing activity that deserved the respect and appreciation of the entire community.
It can be concluded that the work rendered by the sisters in the newly opened “Hospital Homeopático San José”, included the characteristic modes derived from a novel medical practice, adding them to the bulk of nursing knowledge while enriching with their appearance, the foundation for professional development.
