Abstract
An educational intervention study was carried out to modify the knowledge of nursing personnel responsible for the Maternity and Paternity Program nursing at the “Gustavo Aldereguia Lima” university hospital, at the district of Gibara during the time period from May to October 2004. The group included 61 nurses from both genders working at that hospital, of which a sample of 50 was selected (81.96%). A 5 question test was administered to the participants on the subjects presented at the intervention. The test measured the level of knowledge of those individuals responsible for the Maternity and Paternity Program before and after the intervention. An educational activity program was elaborated that ensured an active participation in knowledge acquisition. It was detected that over 60% of the interviewees had an inadequate level of knowledge on the subject before the intervention. Once the educational program had been undertaken and after a subsequent evaluation using the same test, those same individuals showed significant improvement of their knowledge level. It is thus concluded that the educational program subject of analysis did in fact improved the knowledge level and communication skills of the nursing professionals.
