Abstract

A bibliographic revision of several authors was carried out with the aim of understanding the approach of the nursing paradigm integrally and also with the aim of describing the stages of the systematic process. One of the greatest challenges faced by human kind nowadays is the demographic explosion and, specifically, the steadily growing older population. To carry out the revision, the three nursing paradigms were used: categorisation, integration and transformation. The analysis of these three paradigms enabled us to assess the evolution of the nursing discipline and to identify the new paradigm that orientates the current nursing practice in terms of caring for the elderly. Here, the nurse is both, the designer and manager of all the nursing actions through the scientific method, which is no other than the Nursing Care Process. The application of the five stages of the systematic process (data or information collection, data analysis, care planning, implementation and assessment) has enabled us to deepen into the study of the nursing role when caring for the elderly as the centre stage of nursing care in the discipline with the single aim of improving the quality of care. It has been demonstrated that the nursing paradigm of gerontogeriatric nursing must search for strategies aimed at complying with care and attention standards, with a holistic, high quality approach.
