Abstract

A descriptive prospective cross-sectional study was carried out using the total universal sample: 150 first-year nursing students; new pedagogic model at the School of Medical Sciences de Cienfuegos, from September to May of the 2004-2005 academic year. This intervention enabled us to determine the degree of consumption of these legal drugs amongst students. Given that there is great variability in the origin of our students, with the largest percentage originating from the integral course for detached young individuals and students, in terms of work and study, the projection we got at our school was basically reflecting bad habits and attitudes on the part of students and an incidence on the use of the so called legal drugs, mainly alcohol and smoking. For data collection, we elaborated a survey which included the following variables: degree of alcohol and tobacco consumption, degree of drug consumption, level of knowledge of inhalants as legal drugs and in turn, the points that affect the teaching and educational process due to the consumption of these legal drugs. Data were analysed by computer systems and the results were presented in tables and charts that were stated in number and percentages. Once the level of incidence was detected new strategies were planned (action plan) to decrease the reported consumption. The consent of the institution as well as that from the participating students was taken into account.
