Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on the population of the “José Martí Pérez” teaching hospital at Gibara, in the period of time from November 2004 to November 2006, in order to determine the perception of the social image in nursing.
5225 individuals were selected at random from the entire population of subjects over the age of 15 who were registered in that health district and were in full command of their mental and physical capacity. A survey was conducted the aim of which was to identity the social image given by nursing in the said municipality. Studied variables included age, sex, opinion regarding whether nursing professionals should be males or females, considerations on the care received, activities to be carried out by this personnel, as well as the image they project onto others, among other aspects.
The main conclusions were: the concept that nursing personnel should be females still prevails, over a third of the respondent population is satisfied with the care received, helping patients by showing an interest in their problems, giving shots, or curing wounds as well as helping the physician are amongst the main duties carried out by nurses. The social image of nursing deserves admiration and respect. It is acknowledged that the nursing profession is as important as any other profession.
