Abstract

Introduction: palliative care is a special type of care designed to provide comfort and wellbeing to the patients and their families in the final stages of a terminal illness.
The first Palliative Care Unit in Spain was started in 1982 and was officially recognised in 1987. Since then, the number of programs developed in Spain has been growing steadily.
Objectives:
to determine the level of information of a population sample.
Methods and Materials:
this is a descriptive study utilising qualitative research through an 8 item questionnaire that will allow us to ascertain the level of information the population has on palliative care.
Results:
the study results show that of the entire population, only 28.8% has any knowledge about palliative care.
Conclusions:
the population has a lack of knowledge on palliative care, and thus more information should be provided on this subject.
