Abstract

The aim of our study is to determine the attitudes that women residing in the district of Mar Menor have on pregnancy, labour & delivery and the postpartum period. Ten women who were aged between 55 and 91 years (mean 73) were interviewed. Mean delivery was 8.8 and the socio-cultural level was rather low. Most of the respondents were originally from the district and those who were not had been residents in the area for 20 years on average.

Methodology: A semi-structured interview using a validated questionnaire that had been already administered in the city of Elche (Alicante). The interviews were initially recorded and subsequently transcribed. Having analysed the transcripts,  we concluded that the women in our study had the following in common: a large number of pregnancies, delivered at home, most of these women are now more confident with a hospital delivery, they had no health care, they described the midwife and the physician as the professionals who attended the delivery, the majority believe in the influence of religious symbols.
