Abstract
From the perspective of palliative care, communication becomes a fundamental tool for the patient to face his o her cope with his health problem. Adequate communication focused on patient needs, which takes into account the pace at which the patient wishes to receive such information, can provide patients with resources that might help them accept the reality of the present and to come to terms with their disease. To achieve this, a relationship that focuses on the patient and that provides a care based on the overall status of the patient is necessary, and in order to do this, a multidisciplinary team approach must be implemented.
It will be the right of the patient to receive adequate information and also to accept their wish not to be informed if that is what they have asked for.
The aim is to change the reality in which we are immersed, a reality in which no or little information is given, with the family also hiding the information from the patient.
