Abstract

Objectives: to describe the participation and inclusion of children in the Spanish social context in the rites that surround death and related aspects.
Method: observational descriptive study. 75 people between the ages of 30 and 90 were surveyed. The sample consisted of an equal number of males and females all of whom were residents of Valencia. Data and results were processed in Microsoft Excel. All other information used was extracted from the sources cited in the bibliography.
Results: the surveys show that the issue of direct child participation in the rites surrounding death has decreased over time. Additionally, most of the population believes that it is important to inform the child of the death of a family member or friend, even though there are different views on how the news should be delivered to the child. There are also differing opinions regarding a child’s capacity to cope with personal loss.
