Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the social support that older adults get from their family, and from a health center in the northern state of Veracruz. The sample was comprised of 476 adults aged 65 and over, of whom 46% were male and 54% female, predominant age range between 65 and 69 years by 51%.
The instrument was developed by Leiton (1997) and measured the family support to older people variable, with a confidence 0,85 and a validity of 0,86 given by the author. That includes emotional, self-esteem. and instrumental support.
The findings on family support received by older adults, reflect that 57% is high and 32% moderate, while 11% mentioned receiving a low level of family support.
Conclusions: knowledge of the social function of the elderly is extremely important for an appropriate comprehensive approach as it enables the identification of actual and potential resources that may become necessary to approach family support. It can also be said that when social conditions are right, the possibility of living with health problems and maintain greater autonomy and independence increases despite the constraints.
