Abstract

The evaluation of peripheral vascular disease is not only a fundamental skill required for all health professionals concerned about the management of patients with suspected ischemic symptoms in the lower limbs. As such, Primary Care nurses must have the necessary skills to perform the procedure.
The use of doppler ultrasound to calculate the ankle/brachial index (ABI) has been proven as a reliable technique when used regularly by properly trained professionals.
The aim of this paper is to provide a review and synthesis of studies and expert opinions published on the non-invasive arterial assessment using the ankle/brachial pressure index (ABPI), which is still the cornerstone of non-invasive assessment in patients with symptoms of peripheral arterial disease.
