Abstract
The spanish Constitution, in its Article 43, recognizes the right to health protection and states that public authorities are responsible for organizing and safeguarding public health through preventive measures and the necessary social benefits and services.
The way to act in a situation of cardio-respiratory arrest should be an integral action, between the various parties of the chain of survival. The involvement of the first person in the chain of survival is essential. So far, their role in cardio-respiratory arrest was limited to alert emergency services and, at best, to initiate basic life support, consisting of mouth-mouth ventilation and external cardiac massage, until the arrival at the scene of advanced life support equipment.
However, the introduction in the market of semi-automatic external defibrillators has led the scientific societies to promote the use of these devices by suitably qualified nonmedical personnel, who face a situation of cardio-respiratory arrest, using immediately defibrillation while waiting for the health emergency teams to arrive.
