Abstract

The act of caring is very old and the history of nursing is, in large, part of the history of care. As such it has evolved as one of the helping professions with a long and honorable tradition of service to human kind. Educational intervention was undertaken with the aim of changing the level of knowledge about the theory of Henderson in the nursing staff of the Polyclinic “José Martí Pérez” in Gibara, between April 2008 and April 2009. The sample consisted in 72 nurses of which 79,1% fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A survey before and after the educational intervention was administered, and the following variables were studied: Years of experience, professional level, level of knowledge, activities related to basic needs of the patient, and if Henderson's theory applies to nursing practices. At first we found that the nursing staff were unaware of Henderson's theory and it wasn’t considered very important, as well as the activities related to basic needs of the patient. After the educational plan, the survey showed that 95,8% of the sample had acquired the right skills, the theory of Henderson was considered more important and applicable to nursing practices, the graduates were the ones who had a higher level of knowledge with an 86,4%, so we believe that the intervention was effective, with a coefficient of variation of 95,3%.
