Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a complex disorder of the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, whose main characteristic is a relative or absolute deficiency of insulin.
The symptoms reported by patients can be confirmed through different diagnostic tests. The main ones are the oral glucose tolerance test and ambulatory monitoring of blood glucose.
Initially these patients are treated with diet, with intakes spread throughout the day. However, some of them need medication. The drugs most commonly used are alphaglucosidase inhibitors, although many others have been used.
Nurses provide primary care to people diagnosed with diabetes, to contribute to a healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise and health education) and to prevent complications associated to diabetes.
