Abstract

Objective: to determine whether there exists a relationship between exposure to an environment with high levels of air pollution by particulate matter and prevalence of childhood respiratory diseases in two towns in the province of Castellon
Methodology: a descriptive study in a population of 920 children in the range of 10-14 years of age, of both sexes, from L `Alcora and Oropesa del Mar, carried out in January 2007. Of these 920 children, only 39 met the inclusion criteria: being in the range of 10-14 years old and having a clinical record on the Pediatric Pneumology Service of Hospital General of Castellon.
Results: the prevalence of respiratory disease for this age group was 6% (95% CI 3.9 to 8.1) in L'Alcora and 2% (95% CI 0.7 to 3.3) in Oropesa. This resulted in a combined prevalence rate of 3.
Conclusions: the results of this study show that there is a positive association, i.e. the frequency of suffering from a respiratory illness is three times higher in the exposed group than in the unexposed group.
