Abstract

Currently there are several medication delivery systems implanted in the national health system as part of the nursing daily rutine.
Reducing risks and number of medication errors, optimizing workloads and ensuring availability of safe, proper, and efficient medication to meet the therapeutic needs of patients in the nursing units are some of the advantages offered by new technologies in the medication chain.
The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the major technological advances related and applied to the dispensing-administration cycle that are being implemented today in hospitals and at home.
To do this, a literature research in printed and electronic manuals and journals, containing information of these recent developments. In an attempt to provide further evidence in the search various articles and papers on studies demonstrating the efficacy and safety of these technologies in different hospitals, has been included.
We can conclude that such technologies offer an alternative to nursing practice that promotes safer and more effective nursing practice by ensuring and securing better care and avoiding practices which could become a serious threat to patient safety and quality of care provided.
