Abstract

The phenomenon of sedentarism in the population of contemporary modern society is a public health concern, as physical inactivity is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, a circumstance that can act as a mediator for the development of several other pathologies of diverse etiology and the cause of a progressive, faster and premature deterioration of the individual.
The mechanisation of work, the increasing automation of work routines and the massive dedication of our spare time to sedentary activities are some of the factors that have caused this sedentarism phenomen to reach massive proportions.
Because of this, private institutions committed to the maintenance and to the development of health have been recommending for sometime now the need for the individual to acquire a stable routine in terms of physical activity. This involves the active use of free time in healthy activities as opposed to sedentary activities. To summarise there is consensus among specialists in that physical activity is one of the main elements of a healthy life style.
