Abstract

Objective: to compile information on the knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviours of students at the University of Almería (UAL), with the aim of designing a subsequent sexual intervention programme.
Material and Method: cross-sectional descriptive analysis.
Instrument: Oliva et al. modified questionnaire. Non-probabilistic sampling with a selection of students who regularly make use of the UAL services. A descriptive analysis of the data and statistical significance was carried out using Fisher’s exact test.
Results: 63,9% of the respondents said to have received sexual education whilst attending secondary school and 9,8% said to have read information on how to enjoy their sexuality. 20,3% had taken the day after pill and 87,2% had never been tested for HIV. 33,1% thought that using condoms “was unappealing because sensitivity was decreased”. Only 43,9% of boys and 67,4% of girls were in disagreement that the IUD is a good contraceptive for sporadic sex. 30,1% did not agree that just with penetration and no ejaculation a pregnancy can occur, and 30,9% was in agreement that AIDS is not transmitted in oral penetration.
Conclusions: the studied subjects are misinformed regarding human sexuality, a deficit of knowledge in terms of contraceptives and forms of transmission of
sexually transmitted diseases, which appears to be more pronounced in males; as well as sexual risk patterns. The creation of a sex education programme is thus recommended for our young university students; a plan that provides information and health training, whilst helping them develop a healthy and full sexual life.
