Abstract
The aim of this article is to show the importance of prior instructions in defense of the autonomy of patients admitted to a psychiatric ward. A summary of the main legislation governing mental healthcare is presented. The problems of autonomy and patronising these patients are subjected to such, non-voluntary admittance, forced medication treatment, and restraining measures. Additionally, the paper explains what prior instructions are and how they could be applied in the aforementioned scope of mental health. Finally, the role the nurse should have in this process is also examined.
