Abstract

Objectives: to describe the information available on spanish hospital websites and to analyse specific information on nursing.
Method: cross-sectional, descriptive study. A national catalogue of hospitals was used between september of 2006 and april of 2007 to determine which hospitals had a website, enabling the analysis of design, browsing usability and information available on healthcare delivery, teaching, and research and nursing. Results are expressed in absolute numbers and percentages.
Results: 355 hospitals (45%) had a website. 95% presented location details, 40% showed activity figures, 37% offered information on training courses for doctors and 36% for nurses; 26,5% presented medical research projects and 19% nursing research projects. 6% of websites offered health advice. 34 hospitals (9,57%) presented a specific nursing section in the website’s home page. Out of these, 23 hospitals showed the nursing management organisational chart, 15 their mission in the hospital and healthcare delivery model followed, 22 offered information on teaching and 19 on nursing research; 4 websites presented nursing activity annual reports.
Conclusions: 45% of spanish hospitals had a website. Most of them presented the hospital´s location map details and services, but only one third offered information on healthcare delivery, teaching and research and only 10% have a specific nursing section on their website. The presence of nursing sections on spanish hospital websites is very limited.
