Abstract
Osteoporosis (Op) is a systemic disease of the bones characterized by reduced bone resistance, leading to an increased risk of fracture. The prevalence of Op in our population is estimated to be 3.6% in people over the age of 20. Op is more common in females, the ratio female/male being approximately 2:1. Age is the most important factor which determines low bone mineral density. Op per se must not be considered a disease, but rather a condition which leads to fractures. Nursing care for this pathology can be of great importance to facilitate the patient’s self-care and effective coping with the disease, and should be focused on structured healthcare programs aimed directly at these patients.
This article, the fifth in a series dealing with nursing care in rheumatology, presents osteoporosis, covering its general characteristics, its clinical manifestations and the management of these patients’ therapeutic regime.
