Abstract

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) have largely been the centre stage of the most relevant epidemiological and clinical changes of infectious pathologies for the last 30 years. Even though the incidence of bacterial STD has decreased over the last 10 years in the Western world, these diseases continue to be an epidemic in a large part of the planet, affecting even developed countries such as the United States.
Risk factors determine the existence of population groups at risk, in which a higher incidence and prevalence of this type of infections has been detected, thereby increasing the risk of transmission of STDs.
Even though nowadays, the means to prevent the so called sexually transmitted diseases do in fact exist, including vaccines and treatments, it must not be forgotten that prevention continues to be the fundamental action against this type of infections.
The approach to STDs is the responsibility of all health professionals, being midwives among these, who is obliged to teach prevention actively. Consultations carried out within the primary care setting are ideal to explore aspects related to sexual and reproductive health, both for men and women alike, and thus has a sharp incidence on STDs. The primary objective of this work is to present the current situation regarding STDs, paying special attention to the main risk groups and sexual practices. The secondary objective is to adopt the necessary measures to prevent such diseases, both for the individual subject as well for the whole of the community.
