Abstract

Objective: to ascertain the situation of our hospital in regards to CPR, by identifying the state of crash carts and nursing professionals’ knowledge regarding CPR.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study was conducted in the Melilla Hospital. A list of all the contents that should be included in a crash cart was elaborated and all the crash carts in the hospital were assessed, together with their location and review status. Using a self-elaborated questionnaire, knowledge regarding crash carts, the response model in case of CPR and aspects related to the CPR training of nursing professionals were assessed.
Results: a total of 13 crash carts from 12 different units were analysed. Neither of the crash carts analysed entirely met the established criteria. The physical structures of the 13 crash carts (100%) were in good condition. However, the location of 8 (62%) of them is not ideal and the locations of all 13 crash carts were not marked in any way. 94% of the 100 surveyed nurses know where the crash carts are located within the service they work in; 44% directly inform the intensivist on duty in case of CPR; 35% answered correctly to the sequence of ventilation/compression during resuscitation and only 5% know the concept of the 4Hs and 4Ts.
Conclusions: the detected deficit in cardiorespiratory arrest care in our hospital has served to accelerate the development of an in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation Plan. The strategy for normalisation of CPR equipment has already been initiated and the system for the assessment of CPR care will be implemented soon.
