Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the pain degree in Newborn Metabolic Screening Test, as a puncture procedure function: hand or heel.

Neonates born at the "Hospital General de Catalunya" (Barcelona) from october to december of 1997 were chossen as study subjects.

A classical experimental true dessign was performed, cutting out an experimental group (hand punction) and a control group (heel punction). These one were stablished from a simple aleatory probabilistic method.

Physiological and behavioral parameters were observed in order to evaluate the pain intensity.

Obtenied data were analysed with inferencial and descriptive statistical test.

From results were observed that when heel were punctioned, there wasa statistically significant increase of: respiratory frequency, cry time, body movements, punctions number, and test duration.

From the study was concluded that hand punction is less painful that heel punction.
