Abstract

Trough a retrospective study on 57 patients randomly selected, admitted at the ICU of the Corporacion Sanitaria ParcTaul’ during 1997 it has been observed that a level of hemoglobin at admission time lower than 12 g/dl and a medical diagnoses of Pneumonia seem to be associated with a higher risk of blood transfusion. 82,2% of patients who received transfusion stayed more than 10 days in ICU. Althought his data was statistically significant most of them were transfunded before 10 days of length. These factors can help nurses to identify those patients to whom the numberof blood tests and the amount of blood drawn by each sample need to be adjusted in order to take out exactly the amount is needed and not more. Nurses are directly involved in these procedures.
