The use of episiotomy and its variety depends on the countries, the professional group whom belongs the staff attending deliveries and basically on the discrimination of the staff who attends them. The most common variety and the discretion to use it are influenced by more orless territorial records.
This study has got two main aims: a) Describing the Maternal Education Programs influence on preventing the pelvic floor damage; and b) reporting data about the incidence of episiotomy at the University Hospital Virgen del Rocío de Sevilla.
A descriptional and cross sectional study was carried out. Data were collected at the Puerperal Hospital Unit between February and June in 1997 from the following sources: dossier from both mothers and newborns, personal interview to every mother and the registry of deliveries.
