Abstract

From its origin Minor Surgery has been performed by nurses, butcurrently we find a scarce recognition toward this practice. Thus wasthe raison to identify the state of the art and the conditions of thepractice of Minor Surgery by nurses in Albacete and the surroundedarea.

Material and method: Observational, descriptive, cross- sectional study.Population 108 nurses of Primary Health Care (PHC) from the Area ofHealth of Albacete, divided in rural and urban.

Instrument: self-administered survey.

Results:

– 77% practice Minor Surgery.
– 46,5% do not register this practice.
– They have been trained over undergraduate mostly theoretically andmore practically during postgraduate.
– 13% consider Minor Surgery as professional trespass.
– 74% have adapted the sterilization system; in relation of the rest ofdependencies controversy exists.
- Nurses think that the practice of Minor Surgery at PHC would makedecrease the patients waiting time, anxiety and costs.

Conclusions:

– Minor Surgery is daily performance by many nursing professionals atPHC.
– It is more frequent in the rural areas.
– Its practice is influenced by the training received, the available materialand the adapted sterilization system.
– The lack of an appropriate dependency, training and time prevent thepractice of Minor Surgery by some professionals.
– It does not exist a specific registration for Minor Surgery.
