Abstract

The Internal Medicine Unit of the Hospital General de Manresa is thereference unit for oncological patients. The interest of this case consistsin the specific characteristics of the patient and disease process.

– Description of the attention process:
M.G.P. a woman 46 years old was diagnosed of ovary neoplasia in May1997. I n June of the same year a hysterectomy was performed. In Julyquimotherapy was started. In November she had to be admitted due topoor control of the pain and impairment rest and discomfort. The diseaseprogressed with tumor infiltration of bladder and vagina, also bonemetastasis were detected. The main problems at her last admission were:

Hopelessness, distrust and verbal aggression against physical,psychological and social changes; unawareness of disease prognosis,double role of the husband against disease, pain and rest impairment.

Nursing interventions were focused on establishing goals with thecouple; to get agreements about information given by health teammembers; physical care and psychological support to control pain and toimprove patient comfort and finally support and negotiation with thehusband.

– Conclusions:
There is a lack of unified criteria shared by all the professionals and lowcoherence of the information.

Lack of involvement to offer quality of life to hospitalized terminalpatients.

The needs of working as a team and updating on issues related withcaring of terminal patients have been made evident.
