Abstract

Nowadays, the administration of enemas is one of the most unpleasant, uncomfortable and embarrassing techniques for the patient as much asfor the nurse who performs it. For that matter, we designed a randomizedclinical trial, based on the former Verter’s rectal catheter with balloon, which let us compare the benefits, harms, and effectiveness of theadministration of enemas with two different types of catheter: the rectaland the Foley’s, applied as a rectal catheter. After carrying out the study,we recommend the use of the traditional rectal catheter when theamount administered is less than 1000ml., and the use of the Foley’scatheter when the amount is higher, because the results were moresatisfactory in effectiveness as much as in the patient’s valuation.
