Communication between patient’s caregivers and nursing staff

Abstract

The admission into the hospital is for both relatives and patients, a newsituation that causes disruption in their external world and in the way ofcommunicating. Therefore, we are intended to know about the quality ofcommunication between admitted patients', caregivers and nursing staff.

Objectives:

1. To assess the degree of collaboration between caregivers and thenursing staff.
2. To check whether the caregivers are able to identify the nursingprofessionals.

Material and Methods:

– Descriptive transversal study, carried out in the Hospital Clínico "LozanoBlesa" of Zaragoza, over the period of June and July of 1998.
– Two hundred surveys were done: One hundred surveys to the nursingstaff and 100 to admitted patients' relatives/caregivers with 20 and 21questions respectively. Analysis of data was done using Excel-97program.

Results:

– The 79% of caregivers were interested in knowing the staff nursingnames and the 68% in their professional categories.
– The 70% said that their requests were met promptly.
– The 91% were willing to learn about patient’s care.
– The 94% demanded wrote instructions concerning patient’s care.
– The 32% of caregivers were capable of identifying and recognizing theirassigned professionals. The 35% of professionals obtained help fromcaregivers.
– The 72% informed to patients about caring activities and the 43%informed to caregivers.
– The 76% were willing to educate the caregivers.

Conclusions:

– The staff nursling’s identification was significant for caregivers.
– The caregivers were highly motivated to learn about caring.
– The informative discharged document was recognized as very helpfulfor caregivers. A low identification related to nursing staff at patientsadmission time has been found.
– Wrote information at admission was rarely provided.
– Health education was very interesting for both caregivers and nursingstaff.
