A dinamic experience as educator with schizophrenic patients

Abstract

This paper shows a health education intervention carried out with a group of 12 patients with schizophrenia between 20 and 30 years old. All ofthem were under neuroleptic treatment as out patients. Eighty per cent of them had more than five years of evolution.

The pursued goals for the patients were:

- Learning how to assess his self-care and the perception of his own body.

- Increasing his awareness of vulnerability against stress and improving his self-steem.

- Reaching adhesion to the treatment and self-control on descompensations.

Thecniques: demostration with training, operative simulation and role-playing. Three weekly sessions of 45 minutes each over a six months period.

The criteria for the health educator profile included: to be registered nurse, to have experience on Mental Health and optimistic and emphatic attitudes.

Teaching activity helped the patients to be more awared about the disease as well as to develop a health responsible behaviour.
