Abstract

Chronic Venous Insufficiency is a widespread pathology affecting approximately 5% of the adult population. This number has increased over the years, in relation to the "level of development" of the society, mainly associated to a sedentary lifestyle and an increase in life expectancy.

Compression therapy is the treatment of choice for management of venous insufficiency, whether for therapeutic or preventative purposes. It is highly effective provided it is performed correctly in appropriate situations. However, a poorly performed compression not only fails to provide the expected benefit, but may also be harmful to the patient.

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the benefits to be gained from this therapy, the different types of compression, guidelines for performing a correct compression and the existing supports, as well as their properties and indications.
