Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the types of accident presented by those over 64 years, in what circumstances these accidents occur, what their consequences are and what is the incidence of notification of the health services.
Most of the individuals included in the study (n=413) were selected during the flu vaccination campaign and from among the subjects over 64 years assigned to the Primary Health Care Centre. All individuals agreed to be interviewed with the help of a questionnaire designed to collect information on the accidents they had suffered in the last year.
The incidence of accidents among the over—64 population was high, and in most cases, the accidents were not reported to the health services. The accidents among this population occurred with greater frequency in the home and were mostly falls.
The results of the present study suggest that it would be important to perform good accident prevention on the part of the Primary Healthcare Team in order to reduce their incidence and socio-health impact among the population.
