Abstract

Objectives: To identify the frequency with which the diagnoses "Pain", "Fear" and "Anxiety" present during the dilatation cycle. To relate age, parity, maternal education and time in the dilatation room to the frequency of the diagnoses. To analyse the manifestations and the factors related to these diagnoses.

Material and Method: Study: observational, descriptive and prospective. Sample: 258 gestating women in the period of dilatation admitted to five hospitals, selected by a non-probabilistic random sampling. For data collection, a previously validated evaluation sheet was used.

Results: The diagnosis "Pain" presented in 95%, "Anxiety" in 43% and "Fear" in 39,1%. The diagnosis "Pain" was related mainly to uterine contractions, "Fear" to pain, state of the foetus and invasive procedures, and "Anxiety" to confusion concerning the respiratory pattern to follow. The most frequent manifestations were "when the women informs", "expression of pain", "repeats questions", "difficulty concentrating" and "reduced perception".

Conclusions: The most important manifestations found require the healthcare professionals to adopt an attitude of listening, availability and respect, while showing a capacity for observation of non-verbal language. The importance of using a diagnostic methodology is corroborated.
