Abstract
This paper presents a bibliographic review on blood transfusion. Recently, new advances in the treatment of different illnesses have considerably increased the use of blood by-products. Nurses caring for in-patients at the hospital and also some community or district nurses involved more and more in domiciliary blood administration are required to increase their knowledge and keep up with current progress and application strategies in an ongoing process to develop and implement new techniques, skills and nursing care plans in relation to the transfusion blood.
The sections in this article include: the most commonly used blood products, essential material for blood administration, nursing care during administration, post-transfusion reactions (immediate and late), side effects, prevention of undesirable post-transfusion reactions, and intervention in cases of transfusion reactions. A thorough and detailed reading of this article will bring nurses up to date on this subject, enabling them to improve their nursing care in patients undergoing a blood transfusion.
