Abstract
Through clinical practice, the nursing student will be offered the opportunity to develop skills, aptitudes, values and a code of conduct as a result of the socialisation process that will unfold during the performance of the nursing career. The student will not only be exposed to the competences of his or her own future nursing profession , but will also have to deal with the characteristics, significance, relation of power, hidden curriculum, etc. that underline the professional practice. In centres where practicum classes are given, the future professionals have to look for a performance model, a learning and identification role model with the profession which, in many cases, will prove to be a hard task. Most likely, on occasions, the nursing student, will feel as if they are on their own fighting their own battle. Furthermore, they will be faced with a healthcare reality (at times quite far of) which does not nearly match the ideals of what was taught to them and the models presented at their respective nursing schools.
