Abstract

Objective: To determine the extent to which the nursing assessment form is filled out upon admission into a hospital ward, to determine the needs that are most and least valued by the nursing staff, and to detect the needs that most frequently presented manifestations of independence/dependence.

Material and method: A transversal prospective study wasconducted on a sample composed of 202 admitted patients. The Assessment forms filled out during the first 24-48 hours subsequent to the admission were evaluated. The evaluation of the registries was based on the following criteria: filling out of the personal data, assessment of patient needs, and the registry of the independent or dependent status. Data were analysed using the Microsoft Excel" 97 programme.

Results: 93.1% (n=190) of the patients admitted into the unit were assessed upon admission, using the registry. The datum that was the least registered (or omitted the most) was a contact telephone number (77%). The least valued needs were the need to live according to believes (50.5%), the needs to feel busy and feel fulfilled and the need for leisure time (64.5%) and lastly the need to learn (73.3%). The need for hygiene showed the highest dependence.

Conclusions: The majority of nursing professionals in the unit make use of the Nursing Assessment Form upon admission into the hospitalisation ward.
