Abstract

Bronchoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure of essential importance among de instrumental examinations performed in pneumology. Nurses carry out a crucial work during bronchoscopy, providing the patient with all the care he needs before, during and after the examination. Because bronchoscopy is an invasive procedure, patients suffer discomfort and states of anxiety.

In order to bring together criteria and common approaches when performing this examination, nurses in the Endoscopy Unit of Alcorcón Hospital, have developed a Standarised Care Plan (SCP), based on the Virginia Henderson’s caring Model. To develop SCP, the general agreement of experts was used, after we carried out a retrospective research on the Nursing Care dispensed to a sample of 390 patients attended between March 1998 and December 1999. The information was obtained from the nursing records kept on endoscopy control, belonging to all the patients that underwent a bronchoscopy examination during that time.
