Abstract
The surgical nurse is the first point of contact for patients undergoing surgery and is responsible for making sure that the patient is in adequate condition to undergo the surgical procedure safely. The utilisation of protocols guiding the intervention of the nurse in the admission process into the surgical area can guarantee the correct preparation of the patient, reduce the anxiety often experienced by patients undergoing surgery, and optimise the time used per surgical procedure.
