Abstract

Introduction: With the aim to best suit the demands of individuals who have undergone an urostomy, a new device called Alterna Ideal, composed ofa transparent adhesive ring and bags of different sizes, has been developed.This article describes the design and results from the clinical evaluationconducted when the product was introduced in the market in January2002, the objective of which was to assess the effectiveness and performance of the device in a real healthcare setting.

Material and methods: This was an open-label, non-comparative, multicen-tre trial. The transparent disk proved to be extremely good with an excellentperformance, specially in terms of flexibility and disguise or concealment.The maxi bag was also very positively assessed. The peristomal skin improved significantly throughout the length of the study.

Discussion: This new device is a good therapeutic tool for people with anurostomy as it provides a good level of safety in leaks as well as a high degree of flexibility and comfort.
