Abstract
Objetive: To evaluate the objetives, knowledge level and methodological that were used in the programs in sex education of Mérida (Badajoz), as well as to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and satisfaction of the students.
Methods: This is a qualitative study that included the assessment of 25 groups of pupils and one nominal group of sex educators working for government-partially funded and public schools in Mérida.
Results: It was found that teenagers in Mérida have insufficient knowledge on sexuality and reproduction. The quality of the sex education provided, knowledge and attitudes are all influenced by the actual teachers´ personal experiences. A quality sex education reduces risky sexual behaviours, reduces the frequency of intercourse and the number of sexual partners.
Conclusions: Sex education should begin in primary schools. Health professionals should work together with the schools to help promote better sex education. The training of the teachers, as well as the establishment of links between schools and parents are of paramount importance.
