Abstract

Objetive: To valuate the utility of CAGE questionnaire for Primary Health Care Nurses, as an effective instrument for screening alcohol problems, abuse/dependence, in programmed office visits. To compare sanitary variables in the positive CAGE group vs. the negative CAGE group.

Material and method: 130 subjects were recruited in the nursing office visits, over a period that lasted from november 2001 to april 2002. Consecutive Selection technique was used. A camouflaged version CAGE test was administered, as part of a semi-structured interview. We used a CAGE >= 2 cut- off point. Statistical analysis was carried out using the statistical package SPSS 9.0: the Chi-square test was used for qualitative variables and the t test for quantitative variables.

Results: 99% of the patients completed the CAGE questionnaire. 11,5% of them had a score of >= 2, suggesting an alcohol problem. Only 13% of them received specific treatment.
